Senior Manager of Engineering, Noteworthy

Department: Engineering Operations

Reports to: VP of Engineering

Location: Blacksburg, Virginia

As the Senior Manager of Engineering, you are responsible for the technical operations of our Noteworthy email system and are held directly accountable for its uptime and performance. You have demonstratable problem-solving leadership, strong crisis management skills and the ability to motivate and lead your team through the good times and the bad. Your team monitors the operations of over 600 Linux servers, responds to critical alerts, and handles highly technical escalated customer support issues. Additionally, your team is responsible for growing the Noteworthy infrastructure at a rapid rate, which includes planning for and acquiring data center space and hardware, recommending software changes and upgrades, coordinating maintenance windows and working with R&D teams to improve the operational efficiency of the system. You continuously find ways to improve operations by creating well defined technical processes and communication protocols for your team to follow.

Your responsibilities to the customers (the people who pay us the big bucks) include:

  • You enjoy talking with and listening to customers in any situation, including system outages, because you know that the most important aspect of your job is to serve our customers
  • You lead by example to infect your team with your strong customer-focused attitude
  • You act as the top escalation point for issues that get escalated beyond your engineers and you always make sure we are keeping our high-profile customers happy

Your responsibilities to your co-workers (the people pounding at your door) include:

  • You focus your time on hiring, coaching and developing solid people in order to accomplish team goals
  • You scale your management ability through Team Leads who can manage small engineering groups within your organization as your team grows
  • You set development goals for your Team Leads and help them set development goals for their engineers
  • You create a culture of continuous feedback so that everyone will always know where they stand in your organization

Important skills and characteristics:

  • 5+ years of management experience of technical professionals in related areas
  • 5+ years of relevant hands-on technical experience, and a record of individual achievement
  • Great leadership and follow-up skills, customer service skills, and a positive attitude
  • Versatile written and verbal skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to master broad system interdependencies
  • Extensive knowledge of Linux/Unix operating systems
  • Experience with common web technologies: Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc
  • Experience with load balancing and various methods to achieve high availability
  • DNS and Networking fundamentals, including diagnostics with Unix tools
  • Understanding of coding principles and concepts
  • Skilled in leading projects, especially in deploying and maintaining live end-user systems
  • Desire for a leadership career which offers the opportunity to remain technically hands-on
